How to get the most out of your maternity photoshoot - Maternity Photographer Hobart

6 ways to get the most out of your Hobart maternity photoshoot

Pregnancy is an incredible and sometimes challenging time - everyone’s experience is unique and, while you might not always feel it, you deserve images that capture how amazingly beautiful you are!

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or you're going back for a third, booking a professional maternity photoshoot is a wonderful way to celebrate this special time and create some beautiful images to share with your little one in years to come.

In this blog article, I’ll give you some tips on how to get the most out of your maternity session.

1 // Choose the right photographer

Booking a maternity session can be a pretty personal thing, so choosing the right photographer is very important in my opinion. I know pregnancy isn’t always sunshine and roses, and sometimes women can feel self-conscious about their changing bodies… having a photographer you can trust will help you feel more relaxed and at ease during your session.

Look for a photographer who specialises in maternity photography and check out their portfolio to see if their style matches the look and feel you’re after (eg. don’t book a studio photographer if you like a natural outdoor shoot!).

2 // Select a meaningful location

I always work with my clients to help select a location that resonates with them, either personally or as a family. Consider a location that holds personal significance or complements the mood and aesthetic you wish to convey with your images.

We’re very lucky to have so many great locations to choose from here in Hobart. I have a number of favourite spots that I like to recommend or if you have somewhere special in mind, I’m always up for trying new locations! Alternatively, you may prefer an intimate indoor session in the comfort of your home!

3 // Get the timing right

Ideally, the best time to book a maternity session is between 32-37 weeks – late enough for your bump to beautifully round and prominent, but not so late we’ll be rushing to the delivery room mid-shoot!

But when it comes to a maternity shoot, when in your pregnancy to book your session isn’t the only timing that matters… knowing what time of day to schedule your shoot for is also important, especially for an outdoor shoot!

I typically book outdoor sessions during the 1-2 hours around sunrise or sunset. During this time the light is softer, more flattering and has a golden glow - hence the name ‘golden hour’.

4 // Wardrobe and styling

Choose clothing that accentuates your baby bump while making you feel comfortable and confident is key! Opt for flowing maxi dresses, form-fitting outfits, or even classic maternity gowns for an elegant touch. In my opinion, neutrals are timeless and age well. Try to avoid blacks, bright colours and overly busy patterns… and don't forget to coordinate your partner's attire if they will be joining the photoshoot.

Whether you choose to get your hair / make up done is completely up to you, however I do find that mumma’s who can invest a little bit in themselves, tend to feel more confident in front of the camera. And how you feel is what it’s all about at the end of the day. It’s also a good excuse to find 45 minutes to escape and be pampered!

If you need a new outfit, but don’t necessarily want to buy something that you may not wear again, Mama Rentals is an Australian dress hire option for photoshoots, baby showers, weddings and more! I’m very proud to offer my clients a 15% discount for all women's gown from Mama Rentals!

Don’t forget to bring a jacket, especially during the colder months… this is Hobart afterall!

5 // Include the whole family

This is an exciting time for the whole family, so don’t forget to include your partner, other children and fur babies in your maternity photos. These photos will help you remember this special time as a family.

Including your loved ones will also help you more feel relaxed and at ease during the session, creating the opportunity for natural and candid moments, which can often be the most beautiful and authentic!

6 // Focus on the details

Just like newborn sessions, one of the most beautiful things about maternity photography is capturing all the little details of your pregnancy.

Don't forget to discuss with your photographer the possibility of capturing intricate details such as close-ups of your hands cradling your baby bump, tiny baby shoes, ultrasound images, or any sentimental items that hold special significance to you and your journey into motherhood.

One of my favourite shots to capture is a close-up of a mumma-to-be’s beautiful belly!

Pregnancy can be hard, but it’s also incredibly beautiful, and I think it’s important that you have images that capture that. If you’re currently pregnant, I know that you probably have a million things to think about, so hopefully these simple tips will help you feel prepared and get the most out of your session!

Honestly, maternity photography is one of my favourite things to do – there’s something so special about capturing the bond of a mother and child before they’ve even made it earthside! So, if you’d like to learn more about my maternity sessions or are ready to book, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

I can’t wait to meet you and share this beautiful moment in time with you!
