The best time of year for your next family photoshoot
Clients often ask me when’s the best time of year to book a family photoshoot... spoiler alert, there isn’t one! BUT there are definitely pros and cons of each season.
Each season brings its own unique charm and challenges, so let’s explore the pros and cons of booking sessions in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter to help you make an informed choice for next family photoshoot.
Spring (September - November)
Spring in Hobart is such a beautiful time of year, especially if you want to incorporate lush greenery and vibrant blooms in your photoshoot.
Pros:
Spring in Hobart brings lots of colorful flowers, creating a beautiful backdrop for your family photos. Locations like the Botanical Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens are an excellent choice this time of year.
Mild temperatures make it a comfortable option for outdoor shoots and the light is often nice and soft. If you’re booking a photoshoot at this time of year, it’s good to bring light layers, like cardigans, in case it gets a bit cold.
Booking a family photoshoot in Spring will give you plenty of time to print and frame your photos in time for Christmas.
Cons:
The weather in Spring can sometimes be unpredictable and often windy. If you’re booking a photoshoot at this time of year, it’s helpful to be flexible and open to rescheduling if possible.
Some family members might struggle with allergies due to blooming flowers, pollen and increased winds.
Summer (December - February)
Summer brings long days and warm weather to Hobart, making it a very appealing time of year to book a photoshoot.
Pros:
More predictable weather and warm Summer nights make this time of year an enjoyable and easy time to book a shoot.
Hobart's proximity to lots of stunning beaches provides a beautiful and family-friendly setting for a photoshoot. Read more about my favourite Hobart beaches here.
Children (and parents) are usually on school holidays, making it easier to find time in the diary to schedule a shoot.
Cons:
Higher temperatures may be a bit uncomfortable, especially for young children or elderly family members, so it’s best to stay hydrated before your shoot and bring water with you on the day.
Longer days often mean a later start time. Sunset can be as late as 9pm over Summer, so families with young children may struggle scheduling a photoshoot at this time of year.
Autumn (March - May)
Autumn in Hobart is definitely MY FAVOURITE time of year to photograph families, the days are shorter, and light is soft and golden.
Pros:
Autum’s cozy vibe lends itself well to intimate family photoshoots, capturing moments of closeness and affection.
The soft, diffused light and rich hues of the foliage makes Autum a beautiful time of year to schedule a family photoshoot.
Shorter days make Autum a much more child-friendly time of year to schedule a shoot with younger kids.
Cons:
The weather can be unpredictable, so you’ll need to be a bit flexible and be open to creating backup plans. It’s also starting to get colder in Hobart this time of year, so please make sure you rug up.
Autumn is a popular season for photography, so it’s a good idea to reach out to book your session in advance.
Winter (June - August)
Winter in Hobart is a beautiful time of year. The days are crisp, and despite the cold, this time of year lends itself well to lots of cuddles and imitate moments.
Pros:
Like Autum, Winter is a great time of year for families with younger children to book a photoshoot. The days are shorter, meaning an earlier start time that doesn’t interfere with the bedtime routine.
Winter offers a unique, serene atmosphere, perfect for capturing cozy and intimate family moments both indoors and outdoors.
Winter is often less busy for photographers, allowing for more flexible scheduling options.
Cons:
Cold weather can be uncomfortable, especially for young children, making it important to dress in warm clothing and select appropriate outdoor locations (Winter is probably not the best time to book a beach shoot).
Winter also comes with an increased chance of rain, so it’s helpful to be flexible and open to rescheduling if possible.
Whether you prefer the vibrant blooms of Spring, the beachy bliss of Summer, the warm hues of Autumn, or the snuggly feel of Winter, each season offers a unique look and feel for your family photoshoot.
But aside from the aesthetics of each season, it’s also important to consider the weather and timing implications. Autumn and Winter offer more family friendly session times, while Spring and Summer offer warmer weather and more outdoor location options.
By understanding the pros and cons of each season, you can make an informed decision, ensuring your photoshoot is as stress free and fun as possible.
