How to prepare for your next family photoshoot - Family Photographer Hobart

6 ways to prepare for your next family photoshoot

A family photoshoot is a fantastic way to capture special memories you can look back on for years to come. Whether it's a special occasion, holiday, or just a regular day with your loved ones, photographs allow you to revisit those moments and relive the joy and happiness you felt.

However, capturing the ‘perfect’ family photo can sometimes be challenging, especially with little ones. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your next family photoshoot.

1 // Plan ahead

Before your photoshoot, plan ahead and decide on the location, outfits and any props you may need. Don’t forget to bring a jacket for the kids, this is Hobart after all, and the weather could change at any moment. It’s also helpful to consider the time of day and lighting conditions for outdoor shoots, and make sure you have everything you need packed and ready to go before the session.

A good photographer will help you through this process and ensure you feel prepared ahead of your session. I provide my clients with a comprehensive Client and Style Guide which has lots of helpful tips and hints on what to wear and how to prepare for your family photoshoot.

2 // Make it fun

You don’t need to worry about creating the ‘perfect shot’. A family photography session should be fun and enjoyable for everyone involved, so I encourage you to let your children to be themselves and let their personalities shine through. That’s what you’ll want to remember in years to come.

Also, try to relax (easier said than done I know), but kids are very intuitive and will sense if you’re stressed or worried… if you're having fun, they’ll have fun, and it will show in your photos.

3 // Be patient

Patience is key when it comes to family photoshoots. Children are tiny human beings with thoughts and feelings of their own, sometimes they have bad days, get a bit too excited, show off or get overwhelmed, so be prepared to take breaks and go with the flow. Don't worry if things don't go exactly as planned, some of the best photos come from spontaneous moments.

4 // Be yourselves

In my opinion, some of the best family photos capture the natural, candid moments that show a family's personalities and relationships. If you love this style of photography too, encourage your photographer to capture those moments by not posing too much and just enjoying the moment.

It’s also important to pick a location that represents your family and what you like to do together… there’s no point booking a beach photoshoot if you hate sand and you’re going to be uncomfortable the entire time!

5 // Get everyone involved

Make sure everyone in the family is involved in the photoshoot - mum and dad, I'm talking to you! While you might want the focus of your photos to be on your kids, it's still important for you to be in them as well. Afterall, one day your children will look back on these photos and, believe me, they'll want to see you in them.

6 // Choose the right photographer

Last but not least, choosing the right photographer is crucial to getting the best out of your family photoshoot. Look for a photographer with experience in working with children and check out their portfolio to see if their style matches what you're looking for.

A good photographer should be able to put your family at ease and create a relaxed, fun atmosphere for your shoot.

Booking a family photoshoot is a wonderful way to spend some quality time together and capture lasting memories. With a little bit of planning, patience, and a relaxed attitude, you can get the most out of your next family photoshoot and create photos that you'll cherish for years to come!

All my clients are unique, so I believe their photoshoot should be too. I know I’ve been successful when my clients walk away from their session with, not only beautiful images, but also great memories of our time together.

Whatever family means to you, I’d love to capture it! You’ll never regret investing in creating lasting memories with those you love most.
